Tomorrow will be our last QSU meeting of the semester at 6pm in the QRC! Come on down and socialize with the new QSU Board!

Afterward, at 7pm, Citizens for Civil Rights and Indiana Equality Action will be holding a Town Hall Meeting at Pride Lafayette Center on Main St. in downtown Lafayette to discuss this year’s session of the Indiana General Assembly and how their actions affect the LGBTQ community.

The Second Annual Royal Amateur Drag Ball will be this Saturday, April 16 at 7pm in MTHW 210! This year we introduce some new queens and bring back a few of your faves. Come out and support our guys and gals as they lip sync for their lives! The show is FREE! So come out to Matthews 210 and enjoy a ferocious show and don't forget some singles!

This Friday is the National Day of Silence (http://www.dayofsilence.org)! QSU will have speaking cards and other information all day in the QRC. We will also be showing the film "Out in the Silence" that night at 6pm in Stanley Coulter 239

Our meeting tomorrow is "Know the future of your rights!" We will be discussing local and state politics dealing with LGBTQ issues. Come on down to the QRC, STEW G20, at 6pm tommorow to join!

SECOND CHANCE PROM is this SATURDAY, APRIL 9! It starts at 7pm and goes until 11pm at the Lahr Atrium in Downtown Lafayette! The Second Chance Prom is a community opportunity to experience prom and take the person you really want to go with and come dressed as we're most comfortable.Many of us were unable to go with the person we really wanted to go with to our high school prom. At this event, everyone can feel free to bring who they wish and dress how they want as long as it is not lewd or distasteful. Tickets are available at the Pride Office and at the Purdue Queer Student Union. Tickets are $8 per person before the event. Tickets will also be a available at the door for $10 per person. We will have a cash bar for those 21 and older, a King and Queen contest, Prom picture packages and refreshments will be available to everyone.

On Wednesday, April 6, at 7pm, there will be a screening of the film "Wilde" in University Hall 103! Come learn more about this playwright who was imprisoned in the 1890s for his sexuality.

On Saturday, April 9, the LCC will be hosting a celebration of the founding and evolution of the Latino Cultural Center, "Dia de la Familia." Join them between 1 and 3pm at the LCC!

Coffee Night this Thursday from 8 to 10 pm (but feel free to stay later) at Vienna Coffeehouse at 208 South St in West Lafayette (near Chase bank)! Enjoy the many different beverages (not just coffee), baked goods, and other edibles that Vienna has to offer! Meet new people or catch up with old friends in an informal setting.

Indiana Equality “State House Equality Day” 2011
Monday, February 21, 2011 – 9:30-12:30p.m. - Indianapolis
Indiana Equality will be providing a crash course in techniques for successfully communicating with State legislators. There will also be a lunch panel of legislators to discuss legislation and answer questions. Immediately following the lobby training, participants will have an opportunity to meet with State representatives or senators regarding important issues pending before the Indiana General Assembly.

Next Monday, March 1, Second Chance Prom tickets go on sale! This is a great chance to relive your high school prom! Tickets will be $8 per person and it will take place in the Lahr Atrium (Lafayette) on April 9, 7-11pm.

Friends of Europe shows a movie every two weeks and carries out an online poll to determine which movie to show. There is a theme for every screening and this week's is "Queer Stories". The poll is now available at https://purdue.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_b9rRqUHrrMKzsyw . The showing will be on Wednesday, February 23, at 7:30pm in Rawls 1057.

The Victory Congressional Internship is accepting applications for Summer 2011. This summer, the Gay & Lesbian Leadership Institute will bring five outstanding LGBTQ college students to Washington, D.C., for an intensive summer leadership program, including an eight-week Congressional internship and a structured curriculum to learn about the legislative process and careers in the policy-making process.
The program includes a generous stipend, placement in a congressional office internship and travel to/from Washington, D.C. for Summer 2011, as well as travel and registration to GLLI’s International Leadership Conference in Houston, Texas, in December 2011.

Keynote Presentation featuring filmmaker Daniel De Vivo

Daniel De Vivo is a freelance director and producer who believes that films are a powerful resource for popular education and cross-cultural exchange. His film, “Crossing Arizona” exposes the policies, politics, and human costs that have made Arizona the flashpoint in the national debate over illegal immigration that it is today. His current project, “Two Americans”, returns to Arizona to look at two citizens: a 9-year old girl fighting to save her undocumented parents from deportation and a local sheriff who has made fighting undocumented immigration his chief priority.

The Disability Resource Center (DRC), the DRC Peer Mentor Program, and the Center for Career Opportunities is co-sponsoring three Disability Awareness Events during the months of February, March, and April focusing on the topic of transitioning to work for students with disabilities. These workshop events will include refreshments, presentations, and some interactive activities for participants. It is with great excitement and anticipation that these events are presented to assist students in preparing for their eventual employment. The three sessions will be hosted from 7:00PM-8:30PM in LSWN 1106 on the following dates:

The National Organization of Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professionals (NOGLSTP) at Purdue is having their callout on Thursday, January 27 at 5:30pm in BRNG 1255!

The Center for Career Opportunities is recruiting undergraduate students from all majors for the position of the CCO Ambassador 2011-2012. Hey! I hope your first week of classes has been going well! Remember that the QRC is open most of the day, so feel free to stop by during that hour break in your schedule or any time!

This week at our meeting (Tues., 6pm, QRC), we will be playing board games like Apples to Apples or Funglish! Afterward, we will be flyering for the Big Gay Callout!

The Big Gay Callout is this Thursday at 7pm in Class of 1950 (room 224, the lecture room). Our key speaker will be Charlie Shook, Chairman of the West Lafayette Human Rights Commission, who worked to get Gender Identity and Expression added to West Lafayette's Nondiscrimination Policy last semester. Following the speaker, we will open it up to a resource-fair, allowing everyone to visit the different organizations represented. After the callout, we will be hosting a "Coffee Night" at Vienna Coffeehouse (on Chauncey, across from Chase). It's a great time to socialize, make new friends, and get reaquainted with old friends!

Welcome back! I hope you all had a great holiday and are ready for this semester!

This semester, the general meetings for QSU will be held on Tuesdays at 6pm in the QRC. We will have a meeting this week. It will consist mostly of setting some plans and dates for this semester. Feel free to bring any ideas you have to the meeting or email them to me at bklewis@purdue.edu.

The Big Gay Callout will be on Thursday, January 20, in Class of 1950 room 224 (the lecture hall) at 7pm! The speaker this semester will be Charlie Shook, chair of the Human Relations Commission in West Lafayette, who worked very hard this past semester to get Gender Identity and Expression added to their nondiscrimination policy. We will have many organizations present, so come out and meet some new people. Afterward, at 8, we will be heading to Vienna Coffeehouse on Chauncey for a "Coffee Night." (There is more than coffee!) This is a great time to relax and socialize after settling into the new semester.

Purdue Board of Trustees Expands Nondiscrimination Policy

On Friday, December 17th, the Purdue Board of Trustees voted to expand the nondiscrimination policy to include "gender identity and expression" and "genetic information." No votes were cast in opposition of the revision.

With this addition, Purdue joins the majority of its peer institutions and the city of West Lafayette in rejecting discrimination on the basis of "gender identity and expression." The amendment was proposed by Purdue Student Government, who voted unanimously to recommend the change.

The policy will now state, "Purdue University prohibits discrimination against any member of the University community on the basis of race, religion, color, sex, age, national origin or ancestry, genetic information, marital status, parental status, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, disability, or status as a veteran."

Purdue Queer Student Union President Nicholas Goldsmith, "I am proud to see Purdue move closer to being an inclusive community for all."

Jess Rombach, Purdue Student Government Senator for the Council of Organizations for Respect and Equality and author of the resolution stated, "This is a giant step towards a more welcoming environment, so that all Purdue students can equally enjoy their time at Purdue."

Purdue Student Government took up the issue after the Queer Student Union illuminated the gap in the inclusivity of the policies.

West Lafayette City Council voted 5-2 today to add Gender Identity and Expression to its Human Relations Ordinance! Hopefully this will push Purdue University forward on joining its peer institutions and its city.

Please, consider attending the Purdue Student Government meeting on this Wednesday, October 6th at 7:00pm in KRAN G18. A resolution urging Purdue University to add Gender Identity and Expression, as well as Genetic Information, will be voted on then. West Lafayette City Council Extends Civil Rights Protections

On Monday, October 4th, the West Lafayette City Council extended nondiscrimination protections based on gender identity, gender expression and veterans' status. The measure sponsored by Council President Ann Hunt and Mayor John Dennis was approved five to two.

With this addition, West Lafayette joins Bloomington and Indianapolis in rejecting discrimination based on gender identity and expression as well as sexual orientation. Areas covered by the resolution include housing, employment and public accommodations. The change was proposed by the West Lafayette Human Relations Commission chaired by Charlie Shook.

West Lafayette HRC Chair Charlie Shook pointed out, "This was truly a community-wide effort. We had very strong support from Councilor Hunt and the Mayor from the beginning. This again affirms that West Lafayette is an inclusive, safe and diverse community. "

Citizens for Civil Rights Political Action Chair Randy Studt stated, "I applaud the city council on taking a firm stand on behalf of nondiscrimination for all. "

In addition to the hard work of the West Lafayette Human Relations Commission, this measure was supported by a coalition of Citizens for Civil Rights, Pride Lafayette, the Greater Lafayette Chapter of PFLAG, ACLU-Indiana Greater Lafayette Chapter and the Purdue Queer Student Union.

Let's fill the hall with supporters!

The West Lafayette City Council will hear a resolution proposed by the WL Human Relations Commission to add gender identity, gender expression and veterans' status to the city's nondiscrimination resolution. This would add West Lafayette to Bloomington and Indianapolis as the only cities in Indiana to cover these categories against discrimination in housing, employment and public accommodations.

Citizens for Civil Rights and LGBT Leaders across the Greater Lafayette area urge you to be present at this meeting to show your support for those councilors who are supporting this measure. The West Lafayette Human Relations Commission, chaired by Charlie Shook, has worked hard to convince councilors and educate the public on this addition.

CCR and the WLHRC have lined up many supporters to speak in favor of the measure, including local trans activists, religious leaders, students and representatives of Pride Lafayette, PFLAG and Purdue Queer Student Union.

It is possible that there may be vocal opposition to changing this resolution. If there is, we remind all of our supporters to remember to be polite, act and dress professionally and show respect, even if there are untruths and slanderous statements made by opposition speakers. It always benefits our case when we can stand toe to toe with those who would deny rights and protections without becoming disagreeable.

Again, it's key to pack the hall – come out and watch history be made in West Lafayette on Monday night.

This is a fantastic source of income for our organization, which as you know collects no dues and is not funded by the university. Out in the Silence is a documentary film that tells the story of a handful of small-town residents struggling for inclusion amidst vehement anti-gay sentiment. The showing will be followed by a panel discussion.

INTERVIEW OPPORTUNITY
Allison Peltier, a doctoral student in the Counseling & Psychology program at Purdue. Much of her research focuses on Multiculturalism
and she is particularly interested in LGBT issues. She is currently looking for gay, lesbian, and bisexual individuals from underrepresented groups (i.e., racial/ethnic minorities) with whom she can interview. The interviews will likely take an hour to an hour and half and interviewees will be asked questions of a sensitive nature (e.g., his/her coming out story; experiences of acism/discrimination). Please know that if you decide to participate in the interview, your anonymity will be protected and all information will be kept confidential. If you have any questions regarding the interview and/or her research, please feel free to email her at ampeltie@purdue.edu.

All are welcomed to come and find out about the resources on campus and in the community for LGBTQ students and allies, including the Queer Resource Center, the Queer Student Union, ALLY Association, and the National Organization for Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professionals. If you cannot attend this session, feel free to stop by the Queer Resource Center (Stewart G20) during the semester to find out about upcoming events, meet people, or just take a break between classes.

3. "VOICES OF HONOR" DADT REPEAL RALLY

Come join QSU and the Human Rights campaign as we rally to support the repeal of the military's discriminatory Don't Ask Don't Tell policy. The HRC's Voices of Honor Tour has made its way across the country as well as Indiana and is now coming to West Lafayette.
Events will be occuring throughout the day at the following times and locations.
7:00am: Placement of American flags on Purdue Memorial Mall to symbolize all 800 specialists that have been discharged under DADT
1:00pm - 2:00 pm: Voices of Honor, Press conference at Memorial Mall with local veterans and will be covered by local news media.
*THIS IS THE MAIN EVENT!! WE NEED YOU AND ALL YOUR FRIENDS TO ATTEND!!*
7:00pm: "Ask Not" screening, a PBS documentary, followed by a discussion with veteran leaders fighting for the repeal of DADT. This event will occur at Pride Lafayette located at 640 Main Street Lafayette, Indiana.

The LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Asexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, and Ally) community is well-known for voting at a high rate. The Queer Student Union has hundreds of members on our Facebook group and email listserv. In order to better ensure informed voting, the Queer Student Union has decided to release a voter's guide.

Presidential Candidate Comments (Alphabetical Order)

Baldwin / Van Bogaert:

Not only does our ticket support all of these proposals, we have been actively campaigning on them throughout the week. I can guarantee you that if elected, our administration will be one of the strongest advocates for LGBTQ rights ever in student government.

Krites / Steiner:

While neither of us had voting privileges in Senate this year, both Jamie and I supported the bill for these changes to the policy. And, we would continue to voice our support upon election.

While we were researching our platform, we met with Dr. Christine Taylor to discuss our ideas and the needs of this campus. I was able to bring up the topic of hiring a professional staff member to focus on LGBTQ issues. She told me to call her if we got elected to start working toward this.

Managing diversity is an issue on every college campus. And, if President Córdova was willing to create a new position (Chief Diversity Officer) and fill it with Dr. Taylor, we believe that this decision should be mirrored from a student perspective. We would fully support creating an Executive Director for Respect and Equality within PSG.

Senate Candidate Comments (Alphabetical Order)

Carr, Joseph:

Q4) Campus should be a comfortable place for everyone.

Q5) Purdue’s campus can even be intimidating for those on crutches.

Overall) As one of the senators for the college of engineering, I’ll represent the student body and help voice their opinions. If you ever have any great ideas or concerns, I’ll be there! Everyone should be comfortable on campus. Go Boilers!

Chen, Ziang:

Q1) Purdue’s clause for student organizations does include sexual orientation… I have not read its nondiscrimination policy.

Q2) Again Purdue is one of those schools without a lot of the things that other Big Ten school has. This would require additional staffing and the money would only send up our tuition rates. At the current economy it would not be a good idea to invest in such a large project. However, when circumstances are better I don’t see why not.

Q3) Purdue is one of the most diverse college campuses in the country. If others have one then Purdue definitely needs one. Although I don’t know what the job what entail for him/her considering there is a diversity office here…

Q4) I don’t believe that is necessary. The current amount is fine and the extra ones would just take up space where other things can be located.

Q5) Purdue does a good enough job. If there are places where its not accessible, that definitely needs to be fixed. Otherwise I don’t see any issues with the current accessibility considering I’m not disabled. However, I would love to have input about it, if it is such an issue.

Overall) Purdue is a diverse community and there are definitely things that are needed to make everyone included and develop its own world inside this larger world. It takes one step after another to get change to happen, by making people feel more inclusive, such is possible. Everything that I want to do while on PSG is to make the world smaller for everyone. Make more things that will help benefit each other and help relate to each other through student organizations and other networks of communication.

DeBoer, Nick:

Q1) I am embarrassed that this question must be asked in 2010, of course I support adding Gender Identity to the Purdue Nondiscrimination Policy. I have worked with Senator Vanbogaert in the initial passing, and was in attendance for the Purdue ACLU upon its passage in the Purdue Student Senate this year. I will work to ensure that the Trustees adopt the measure and ensure its successful implementation.

Q2) I support the idea, and am sure it would be of great asset for students seeking their support. My only concern would be whether there is available funding in our current circumstances to afford a full time staff. That said, if presented with the opportunity to implement such a staff, I would be in complete support.

Q3) I want PSG to work for the students in the most efficient and direct manner possible. Therefore, I would first ensure that the current executive director positions are not fulfilling the duties this office would hold. If such a position had a well laid out agenda, and a competent individual appointed to the role, who was knowledgeable of the diversity issues on campus, then I would support the amendment processes by which to create the position, and would work to confirm the appointment.

Q4) Yes, of course. Gender-natural bathrooms are common sense, and should not be seen as just an LGBTQ issue. Fathers who must accompany their young daughters in the bathroom, or mothers accompanying their sons, also face the same issue of a lack of gender-neutral washrooms. Working to expand the availability of these washrooms would assist the entire community, and I therefore support their expansion and implementation.

Q5) As a general philosophy I do, though I must admit some ignorance as to what the current issues prove problematic and what solutions Purdue Student Government can assist in correcting. All new buildings should, and must, meet ADA standards. We will continue working to keep our university accessible, and should issues arise with accessibility, I am always willing to listen and seek solutions that our student government can implement.

Overall) I simply want to thank QSU and the entire Ally community for the work you do here at Purdue. I have been President of the Purdue American Civil Liberties Union for two years now, and am aware of many of the issues that continue to affect this campus. You will always have my ear in working through, and addressing problems. Harvey, Valencia:

Q1) No group should be excluded from any institution’s discriminatory policies. Purdue should acknowledge possible discrimination within this category.

Q2) Other minority groups or underrepresented organizations have professional staff, so I don’t see why LGBTQ should not have professional support.

Q3) Diversity is the core of understanding others and working with others regardless of differences. I think it would be good asset to PSG.

Horton, Katherine:

Q1) I would definitely support adding Gender Identity and Expression to Purdue’s Nondiscrimination Policy because I believe that it is not fair for individuals to be judged and discriminated against simply for not fitting the narrow stereotype of what it means to be a man or a woman.

Q2) I support the use of a LGBTQ professional staff because it never hurts to have guidance and encouragement from an experienced authority, especially in student organizations.

Q3) Purdue Student Government could definitely progress with the addition of a Student Director of Diversity, since Purdue is such a unique and diverse campus with 6,000 international students from 126 different countries. These students deserve a government representative to act and promote legislation in their best interests, along with disabled and minority students.

Q4) Our campus could really use more single-use, gender-neutral bathrooms because it would display Purdue’s interest in achieving a nondiscriminatory attitude regarding gender identity and expression. I highly support increasing the number of gender-neutral bathrooms because it would both benefit students and progress Purdue’s diversity-related actions.

Q5) Having several personal experiences with disabilities, I am a big supporter of making campus more accessible for disabled students and faculty. A commitment to diversity is not complete without providing equal options for all our diverse students, especially those with both visible and non-visible disabilities. Several of the buildings on campus have stairwell-entrances, which pose a challenge for students and faculty who have difficulty walking. Purdue did a great job building the ramp to Lily, but there is a still long way to go in achieving a campus that is completely disability-accessible.

Overall) As a College of Engineering Senator, I would provide responsible leadership for all Engineering students and disciplines. My biggest concern is ensuring that the opinions, ideas, and complaints of students are heard by the University and are addressed appropriately. School is my number one priority, along with many other Engineering students, and I believe that we should have a larger influence on the college’s policies and actions. As a Senator I would be constantly serving and representing all Engineering students, and act in their best interest. The relations between Engineering faculty and students outside of the classroom would be improved by encouraging the individual schools and their organizations to provide student/faculty social events. Finally, I would support and develop beneficial legislation for both the College of Engineering and Purdue as a whole.

Mankus, Allison:

Q1) I believe that no student should be discriminated against. I would have voted for adding in political identity and gender identity/expression to the nondiscrimination policy in PSG senate had I been present. I believe, however, these policies have no real teeth. As a conservative Republican, I have been discriminated against by a professor in a class before and it was an unfortunate situation. Had the policy included political affiliation, I still do not believe it would have changed the situation. As I said, I don’t believe anyone should be discriminated against; however, that’s life.

Q2) This is an inappropriate use of funds in an economically difficult time. We need to focus on academics- bringing in better professors, improving curricula, etc. If we had support staff for one community, then everyone should have a support staff. Just because one is straight does not mean one does not need support. So no, I do not support giving a single community benefits.

Q3) The idea of forced diversity sickens me. Diversity is more than having x number of students of one race and y number of students of a certain persuasion. I do not agree with fostering diversity in this manner.

Q4) That is unnecessary and a highly irresponsible use of money in this economically difficult time.

Q5) Of course, not in terms for diversity, but just for accessibility for any student seeking an education. As a biology student, I’ve seen first-hand how inaccessible Lilly Hall is for those who are physically disabled. I definitely support making this campus more accessible to those with disabilities.

Perram, Melissa:

Q1) As the current Senator for the College of Engineering, I voted in favor of the resolution passed, through PSG, in support of this change.

Q3) I support the creation of a Student Director of Diversity and believe this position would be beneficial to the organization.

Q1) As a safe haven for students’ learning Purdue should be a nondiscriminatory community for all people. This should be regardless of political preference, gender identity and expression. I support amending our nondiscrimination policy to include these things.

Q2) As an RA and a student at Purdue I am aware of the size and strength of the LGBTQ community. I support the many different groups that support LGBTQ individuals. This said, Purdue and our country as a whole are currently experiencing a very tough economic situation. I do not feel that Purdue should be adding any new professional staff at this time. This includes any of the new positions that have been created by Purdue in the past year.

Q3) Before expanding the PSG at all I would need more details as to the role of the new position and the ability of PSG to get these things done without a new position.

Q4) As stated previously I do not support Purdue’s funding of any unplanned renovations during the current economic position.

Q5) From my current perspective it is hard to think of a part of Purdue that is not handicap accessible. As stated before a complete overhaul at this moment is not economically feasible. That being said if there was to be a specific problem it is necessary to fix it as soon as possible.

The Latino Cultural Center is sponsoring a film festival this semester. Next week, a movie about one of the most famous Cuban writers recognized in the US, Reinaldo Arenas will be presented. This movie is based upon his life.
Born in 1943 in Holguín, a rural mountainous area in northeastern Cuba, Arenas lived in such poverty that he wrote that he didn’t even have paper to write his poetry. In a region where schools and hospitals were rare, the fact that this guajiro (country boy) could read and write was miraculous, let alone the fact that he wrote beautiful poetry. His poverty, his poetry, and his sexuality made Arenas a victim to a bigoted society. He led a mostly miserable life in Cuba where he was mercilessly persecuted in one form or another for being himself, but he lived for a decade in the US disillusioned. This movie stars Javier Bardem in the lead role. Sean Penn has a small role and Johnny Depp plays a transsexual.

PSG Resolution

To beloved Queer and Ally Community,

While the Queer Student Union generally does not send out policy statements, the nondiscrimination policy has been deemed an exception.

Today, February 10, 2010, the Purdue Student Government Senate approved of a resolution urging the University to amend its non-discrimination policy to include Gender Identity and Expression, Genetic Information, and Political Affiliation. The resolution was passed unanimously, and we congratulate Purdue Student Government on
its overwhelming support. This policy, if approved by the administration, will be more inclusive of the Queer community at Purdue, helping to add levels of protection against discrimination and harassment to many members of our community. Purdue University is currently the only Big Ten University to not include Gender Identity
and Expression in its policy in some way.

This resolution still has a long way to go before it becomes a reality, but we certainly are one step closer.

The Queer Student Union would like to thank Purdue Student Government for its passage of the resolution, and urge those who will see this resolution in the future to follow with strong support. Thank you to our senators for passing this resolution.

A recent personal blog post by Purdue librarian, Professor Bert Chapman, has raised the conflict between free speech and community standards. The undersigned groups support free speech, but that does not mean there are no consequences for such statements. While it is clear that all individuals have the right to print anything they wish regardless of the lack of value or research, it's also true that statements in print (or in this case on-line) should be rejected and called out when they misstate the facts and cause damage to a segment of the community. In this case, "An Economic Case Against Homosexuality, " is a mishmash of anti-gay rhetoric denouncing immorality and a pseudo-factual analysis of the economics of HIV infection. But the poor quality of research and the obvious bias against gays undercuts any serious consideration of his thesis, let alone the obvious conclusion, which Chapman does not seem to have the courage to state. Since he argues that money spent to fight HIV/AIDS (which is more prevalent now in the heterosexual community than the GLBT) is wasted, he is, in effect condemning all infected regardless of orientation to a death sentence. Such a poorly researched and sourced statement as this is shocking enough from a university staffer, let alone a tenured professor responsible for library research in the field of political science.

The Lafayette-West Lafayette community has taken years to develop a standard of respect and support for our GLBT citizens. Support for this part of the community is clear in the attendance at OUTfest 2009 and the strong backing of the Pride Lafayette Community Center. The Tippecanoe County area is one of a very few in Indiana where sexual orientation is included in non-discrimination ordinances. These advances were hard-won and require effort to maintain the community standards once established. Purdue has also made considerable effort to promote diversity and inclusion. In fact, the university has created a position of Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion, which is tasked specifically with creating an inviting campus environment. The current climate on campus was difficult enough to achieve. This level of respect is threatened when staff members so blatantly disrespect and publicly disparage a whole subset of the university body.

Purdue Queer Student Union, ALLY, Delta Lamda Phi, and community organizations Citizens for Civil Rights and Pride Lafayette support anyone's right to speak freely about any topic. But we reject the gross mischaracterizations and untruths contained in Professor Chapman's blog. We urge the campus and community to join us in this condemnation.

To our absolutely amazing queer and queer friendly community:

Welcome back to school! I hope everyone had a great break, whether they stayed here or went back home. Either way, the spring semester has started, so that means our spring callout is here! Come to Mathews 210 on Thursday, January 22nd at 7pm. Everyone is welcome!!

We are also inviting campus and community groups to present at our callout, "to show the wealth of resources and opportunities available" [gacked from our president's email]. If you wish to present, you must apply by submitting a paragraph describing the organization and how it relates to LGBTQ and ally students, along with the name and email address of the person who will be making the presentation to crford@purdue.edu by Monday, January 19th at 7pm. Groups will have three
minutes to speak, and no late applications will be accepted. PQSU will select
the groups to speak at the "Big Gay Callout" from the on-time applications.

In addition, in order to build and cement bridges between us and other organizations, we will require that presenting organizations eventually co-sponsor an event with us. While you do not have to have an event planned by the callout, just be aware that this is to be done sometime this semester.

Election Results [Yay] and Finals Week [Boo!!]

Dear community

Huzzah for the approach of Winter Break! We've had an overwhelmingly busy semester [in good ways and bad], and I hope you've had as much fun as I've had. Just to recap the past few weeks, we've had our executive board elections, and expanded our board from 4 to 9!! The members of the previous board are still with us, though some of us have new titles. I am no longer the Librarian, but I will continue to be the blogger of this site [haha can't get rid of me quite just yet!]. Our previous President remains at their post, and the Vice-President position is now split into two positions: Vice President of Internal Affairs and Vice President of External Affairs [c'est moi]. We have kept our Treasurer, but now also have an Activist Chair, Secretary, and two Social co-Chairs, and a new Librarian. Check up on our results on the facebook page!

And to those of us slogging through finals: good luck to everyone! Look forward to seeing you in spring!

Catchup and Rally

To Our Loving Queer and Queer Friendly Community:

This has been a very eventful few weeks, and not necessarily all in the positive. I apologize for being on hiatus while dealing with these various incidents, on top of being a student as well.

On Sunday November 9, the Purdue chapter of the NAACP [National Association for the Advancement of Colored People] held an open discussion of recent hate crimes which had occurred in and around Purdue. The original intent of the discussion was to inform the Purdue and West Lafayette community of two incidents, which were racially based, that had occurred that week. However, the president of the Purdue chapter of the NAACP, Ronard Black, was informed of an incident against the Queer Student Union during Homecoming weekend (October 25).

First off, allow me to explain the Homecoming incident in detail, as it is chronologically first, and most relevant to our community. Also, this event has not been chronicled very well in the local media. Information on the other two incidents, which were the vandalization of a tree, and an incident involving the restaurant Triple XXX, can be found in the Exponent and the Journal & Courrier. I personally recommend the J&C.

The Queer Student Union decided to take part in Homecoming events this year to show our school spirit. One of the events we decided to take part in was Window Painting. In the Window Painting event, we paint the window of a local business with a sports theme, which was sponsored and organized by PSUB [Purdue Student Union Board]. We applied for Hotbox Pizza but were assigned Purdue Wrestling as a theme by PSUB.

Early that week, we painted the Hotbox Pizza window with the theme of Purdue Wrestling. It included the title “Big 10 Champions”, years in which Purdue Wrestling had won Big Ten, an image of two generic wrestlers ready to attack each other, and the words “Purdue Queer Student Union” and “All Allies Welcome”. We received many compliments, and overall the atmosphere was very welcoming.

On Saturday afternoon [Oct 25], a group of individuals took offense at the QSU window decoration. Some of them identified themselves as members of Purdue’s wrestling team. The group proceeded to scratch off the name “Purdue Queer Student Union”. Also, a small group of them also went inside to harass the employees of Hot Box. To prevent damage to the window, Hot Box employees provided the group with materials to remove the paint safely.

By the next day [Oct 26], the executive board of the QSU was well aware of the incident. Hot Box promised (and later gave) a written report of the incident. QSU’s president, Clare Ford, emailed the Dean of Students, the Athletics Department, PSUB, Provost Woodson and the LGBT Advisory Board. By Monday we had received enough responses, including a list of names from Scott Henkle, the head coach of the wrestling team, that we comfortable enough to approach the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities.

There are clearly two violations: 1) a damaged window decoration, and 2) the targeting of an organization due to sexual orientation. QSU requests that apologies be made to us and to Hot Box, and that perhaps the team or the athletic department as a whole make some sort of statement condemning homophobia**. Also, the team could also consider undertaking some sort of diversity training in order to learn from this experience.

QSU will be taking part in an anti-hate crime rally on today (Tuesday November 11). It will be at the tree outside Recitation and Class of 50, at 3 pm. I will speaking about the Hot Box incident, and other speakers will explain the Triple XXX and tree incident as well. Please come out and pledge your support against hate crimes.

OUToberfest Recap

Dear queer and queer-friendly community,

OUToberfest was a BLAST!! I was absolutely ecstatic by the numbers and the people who showed up. Lots of gay couples, lots of gay singles, lots of straight couples, lots of straight singles, and so many kids!! Granted, most of these kids had leave before the drag show... which was awesome. M yfavorite part of the drag show... I can't decide between a very pink fairy MC waving a wand at the crowd "I make you all gay friendly~~!!", or the Dream girls performance.

I definitely had a lot of fun at all the booths, bought some really cool stuff as well [waves her new ring]. PQSU sold a whole bunch of t-shirts, and mucho fliers were passed out. Totally, a success. Queer friendly vendors in full force!!

We did, however, have two protesters show up. In the words of my friend, "2 protesters to 3000 attendees? I think we're doing quite well :) "

Welcome to OUTober!!

Dear Queer and Queer-friendly community,

We've got a busy month ahead of us! It is very appropriate, considering that October is considered LGBT History month. Recap of last week: Walleyball last week to kick of OUTober, followed by Politics 101 the next day.

On Tuesday October 7th, there will be a volunteer callout to help with OUToberfest. It's at 8, right after QSU's weekly meeting, in the QRC [STEW G20].

On Wednesday October 8th, the Panhellenic Association is organizing the Take Back the Night March. Take Back the Night is a chance for you to show your support and take a stand for all those who have been involved in a sexual assault or abuse incident. The march starts off in MSEE following some speakers, and then will follow a path to Slayter Hill.

Thursday is going to be a busy day. From 7 to 9, Ally will be co-sponsoring an event with DRO [Diversity Resource Office], the National Coming Out Day Panel. This multicultural and multi-generational panel will discuss the issues of coming out, in Forney G140. Also, at 8, PQSU will be having it's monthly coffee night at Vienna. Feel free to drop by after the panel as well.

Finally, the event we've all been waiting for! Saturday, October 11th, from 4pm to midnight will be OUTober fest!! It'll be in downtown Lafayette, between 6th and 7th streets on Main Street. Pride Lafayette, Inc. and partners are hosting Greater Lafayette's first-ever Pride celebration. The event will feature live bands and DJs, food, information booths, a family area, dancing, drag entertainment, extended hours for local downtown businesses, and much more! Admission is FREE. Also, if you haven't gotten your OUToberfest shirts yet, they're $10 and available in the QRC.

A big THANK YOU for those of you who attended the Date-a-Queer Auction! And a special thank you to those who had bidded [especially on me :) ]. It was hilarious, and a great amount of fun! We made over $400, a portion of which was shared with Ally Association.

Outoberfest T-shirts! T-shirts are $10, and proceeds will be to benefit Pride Lafayette and Purdue Queer Student Union. We're selling all week in the QRC (STEW G-20). There will be officers available to sell shirts from 4:30-6pm Tuesday through Friday, and also from 1:30-4pm on Wednesday and Friday. Other times as officers are available!

Twice this week Purdue University played "host" to evangelist speaker Brother Jed Smock. The Purdue Queer Student Union made an appearance to demonstrate that Purdue has other views. We passed out many fliers, calendars, key chains, and even sold T shirts for Outober Fest while we were out there. A big thank you for the support from the greater Purdue community! We raised over $100 in donations!

Onto exciting upcoming events!! Walleyball will be on Wednesday October 1, from 7-9 in the RSC (Recreational Sports Center). Bring your competitive side! Also, Politics 101 will be on Thursday, October 2 at 6pm in LWSN 1142. We'll speak about LGBT issues in the upcoming race, and help people register.

Big Gay Callout Followup

I hope everyone has had a great first two weeks of school! Your QSU board has been working really hard on making the QRC [Queer Resource Center] more friendly for hanging out! We spent a weekend before school reorganizing the center, which was unveiled at the Open House. Drop by, STEW G20, and tell us how much you love it!

Also, the Big Gay Callout was today, September 4th. We announced many upcoming events [from coffee nights to board game nights to video game nights to Date-a-Queer!!], and had many organizations present.

A BIG THANK YOU to the people who attended the callout, and the organizations who presented. The organizations included Delta Lambda Phi [DLP], Power, National Organization of Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professionals [NOGLSTP], Citizens for Civil Rights [CCR], Indiana Equality [IE], Pride Lafayette, Diversity Resource Office [DRO], Driven, Bible Study, Get Real About Discrimination and Zeta Sigma Chi.

Big Gay Callout!!

The callout is open to anyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. It's just called the "Big Gay Callout" because it's a tradition, not because we mean to exclude anyone!

BGR Freshmen!

To our loving Queer and Queer Friendly Community:

Let's all give a warm welcome to the incoming freshmen! Currently going on this week is Purdue's Boiler Gold Rush [BGR], an orientation for incoming freshmen. Members of the board and other organizations held an info session titled "What's Queer about Purdue" on Monday and Tuesday for BGR. We introduced the freshmen to the various resources available at Purdue, and got them motivated to join in on the fun.

Also on Tuesday, BGR had an activities fair in the Armory, in which PQSU had a table. We got many new faces to join the listserve, or just plain take our stickers and keychains.

Headsup! This Saturday the QRC will be open from 11 to 1 as part of an Open House, also geared to introducing freshmen to the office. And mark your calendars! The Big Gay Callout will be on September 4th. Details soon to come.

PURDUE QUEER STUDENT UNION CELEBRATES NATIONAL DAY OF SILENCE

WEST LAFAYETTE: This year's National Day of Silence at Purdue University will be commemorated by the Purdue Queer Student Union on April 18. To raise awareness on campus, students will take a vow of silence from 6AM to 6PM. A “Breaking the Silence” event to formally end the Day of Silence will be held at Academy Park at 6PM.

The National Day of Silence is a nationwide, student-led event during which thousands of high schools and college bring attention to anti-LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) name-calling, bullying, and harassment in schools. The event is in its 12th year, and is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of participants this year nationwide.

The Day of Silence is the culmination of a month-long celebration of events in April called “GAYpril”, sponsored by the Purdue Queer Student Union (PQSU) and other organizations on campus. Other popular GAYpril events such as “Homo Estas”, “That's So Not Gay Forum”, and “Joto: Coming Out Latino” have also raised awareness of LGBT issues both on campus and in society.

“We are very excited about a high participation rate this year, based on the number of awareness materials and communication kits already passed out. This year's turnout will be a huge improvement over last year's event” explained outgoing PQSU President Andrew Stevens. The communication kits are to aid in explaining a person's vow of silence. Kits will be distributed throughout the day on Friday outside of Class of 1950 Lecture Hall. Explaining the motivation for a vow of silence, incoming PQSU President Clare Ford explained that

“It's difficult to work and learn in an environment where you must remain silent about much of your personal life. Through the National Day of Silence, students see first-hand the passive censure which occurs every day in a more direct manner.”

The GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network) National School Climate Survey conducted in 2005 revealed that four out of five LGBT students report verbal, sexual or physical harassment at school and 29% report missing at least a day of school in the past month out of fear for their personal safety. This year's event is in memoriam of Lawrence King, a 15-year-old student who was shot and killed by a classmate because of King's sexual orientation and gender expression.

Sunday NYT article about Transgender students in college

In the Sunday New York Times, there was a long article written about transgender and genderqueer students at women's colleges such as Barnard College, Smith, and so on. The article is available at this link: When Girls Will Be Boys.

I was pleasantly surprised at the accuracy of the article and its attempts to broaden the general public's knowledge about these often blacklisted topics. While Purdue is a co-ed school, many of the points touched upon in the article are also relevant at our school (gender-neutral bathrooms, forms, ENDA, and so on).
